Profile of Forest

Forest : Forest is an area with large number of plants, variety of animals and other living organisms. It forms an ecosystem where different living organisms interact among themselves as well as with the non living components of the forest. Forest constitute about 31% of total global land area. It is a natural renewable resource which helps to purify the air by comsuming carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They are useful to man kind in many ways.

Mnay trees like sal, teak, semal, sheesham, neem,palash fig, khair, amla, bamboo, kachnar and many other are also found in the forest. The forest also contain insects, butterflies, honeybees and birds which help in pollination in the flowering plants.

Structure of forest :

1. Canopy :  The uppermost branches and leaves of the tall trees which act like a roof over the forest ground is callled canopy. It is the highest layer of vegetation in the forest. The branchy part of a tree above the stem is known as the crown of the tree.

2. Understorey : The different horizontal layers formed due to different types od crowns in the forest is called understorey. The constituent of understorey can be described as follows:

(i) Top layer : It constitutes the gaint and tall trees followed by shrubs and tall grasses.

(ii) Shrub layer It has many shrubs and bushees of approximately 1-2 metres of height from the forest floor. It makes dense layer at some places of foret where enough sunlight is present.

(iii) Herb layer Just below the shrub layer occurs the herb of palnts. It is the lowest layer of vegetation in the forest.

(iv) Forest  floor : Plants found here are small as mosses, liverworts,lichens. It has many kinds of insects, worms, toad stool etc. Most of the forest floor is covered with dead and decaying palnt matter, and animal waste.
